Amazonite is a light green, bright green, or blue-green variety of microcline feldspar. The color of amazonite is caused by a small amount of lead as an impurity within the microcline.
It is frequently cut as cabochons and set in earrings, pendants, and pins. SInce it has perfect cleavage in two directions it is less suited for rings because even a small impact could cause it to crack.
Some legends say that the name of Amazonite came from the female Amazon warriors of the Bronze Age, whom allegedly were known for their habit of giving green colored stones to the men they came in contact with. Ancient Egyptians also used this stone, it was one of the six most precious stones to their civilization.
